The Urban Farmhouse ~ Pool Talk

I think it's safe to say that one of the most unique features of The Urban Farmhouse design is the indoor swimming pool. It either raises a concerned eyebrow or brings a smile, depending on the person and their contribution to our building process. We've had quite a few people think we're absolutely crazy to want an indoor pool, saying how much work pools are, but we've owned a pool and it's where our design started. We had a pool in Texas and miss it; being able to swim every day and the entertainment/lifestyle that went with it. So when we thought of our dream home, a pool was the absolute first thing on the list.

Swimming pools are actually quite common here in Saskatoon, which I never would have thought. Mostly backyard pools, with the exception of a handful of indoor pools. There are 3 main pool companies here and we have contacted all of them for a quote. The cost ranges from $40,000 to $60,000, which I don't have to tell you is a lot of money. So to make a pool fit our budget, we've had to explore other options and have settled on doing it ourselves.

So the first question is can you really install a pool yourself? The answer is yes! From all of the research we've done, tutorials & reviews we've read and videos we've watched, it's certain that a diy pool is not for everyone. But if you've ever met my wife, you know she is the most determined, handy and resourceful person on the planet. If anyone can do this successfully, it's her. Well, us. She will ensure we can do this.

The second question is where do you buy a diy pool kit? From all of the research we've done, Pool Supplies Canada looks to be the best place, in our opinion. Not only do they have tons of options, but they also have great customer reviews and offer full support when installing your pool. You can purchase complete kits from them by simply choosing if you want above ground, in ground or semi in ground, a shape, size and color to fit your needs and your kit will be shipped straight to your door.

The next question is how on earth do you install a pool yourself? Just google it. There are tons of video tutorials from regular people who have installed their pool themselves. Or just browse these photos below, thanks to Pool Supplies Canada. There are a lot of steps, and each one is very important to achieve success. You don't want to rush through anything or your end result will not be good. The key is to do your research and take your time.

Installation is only one part of the equation of living with an indoor pool. We've also had to think of things like how to control the humidity throughout the house, safety for kids and pets when the pool is not in use and safety rules for when the pool is in use. Thankfully the internet is full of useful information to help us along the way and we've been working with some pretty awesome professionals who are here to help us ensure our dream is a success.

We won't be starting on the pool until the rest of the house is completed and we're living in it. Our target start date is the beginning of May but if we can get to it sooner, I'm sure we will.

If all goes well, we'll be celebrating Brielle's 4th Birthday with a pool party!

  2. This is really amazing. I have not saw such a good piece of work by the engineers from long time. The EssayPro com review once said that there will be some people out there who will work in houses like this to make such things. I am very amazed to see this and would like to have one to be built for me and my kids.
