Potty Training

The potty training girl!!

Good morning! I'm happy to report that we are on day 3 of potty training and I'm very happy with how we've done so far. I have to admit, I was nervous and actually wasn't ready to tackle this as of yet, but the dear sweet soul who introduced us to EC (elimination communication) sent me an email and shared with me the book she had used to potty train her daughter, who is a month younger than Brielle. I was super excited by about page 3 of the book and knew we would be doing this soon!

Those darned panties are a girls biggest problem!

If you have a little one that you need to potty train, this is the book to get. Don't waste your money on anything else. And follow the process. It works!

3 Day Potty Training
Start Friday, Done Sunday!

Again, don't waste your money on anything else and try not to use the 3 day method where your kid has to be naked for 3 months. How practical is that? It's not.

One of our activities was a letter to Santa

On day 1 we had 3 accidents with the last being one where she knew she had to go, ran to the potty shouting "potty" but it was too late. So I guess that's not truly an accident because she knew and made the effort to get there, but at the same time, she had completely soaked the floor and panties. During nap time on day 1, she woke up with a dry diaper. And yes, we are choosing to keep a diaper on for sleeping simply due to her age. We've made the decision to day train and then we'll worry about night training when she's a little older and more aware. We have to remember she's only 17 months; not even a year and a half yet.

On day 2 we had one accident and a few times where she made it to the potty but had a few drops in her underwear. Just enough to make that little wet spot. It's not much, but there is no way I believe she needs to wear underwear with any amount of wetness, if even a few drops. I have to say that being nervous really was silly of me and that she's doing so awesome. I'm very proud of her!

Those darned panties again!!

For this method you need to eliminate as many distractions as possible; minimal computer and phone usage, no visitors, no heavy house cleaning, no leaving the house to run errands or go shopping. The entire 3 days should be spent with you by your kids side. Engage in activities with them and when you are cooking or cleaning, they should be with you. So we've set aside this entire week for that. The only time we've left the house was to attend Brielle's final gymnastics class yesterday.

Another of our projects to keep us busy. Hanging footprint and the reindeer is her thumbprint.

So during the past couple of days Brielle & I have pretty much been inseparable. We've been coloring, doing crafts, watching Sesame Street, listening to music, baking, playing toys, playing games, painting her toes and in the evening before bedtime, we all like to sit down together and watch America's Funniest Home Videos. She loves that show!

First night in her big girl bed. Zonked!

We didn't plan for it to happen this way, but the same day we started with potty training, we also put Brielle in a big girl bed. The first night was great. Rhonda (who typically does bedtimes in our home) only had to put her back in bed once. But we knew that nap time during the day would be our struggle. And it was. I spent over an hour sitting at the top of the stairs, near her door, putting her back every time she got up. Persistence pays off and I think with a few days of consistency, she'll be a pro at going to sleep in her big girl bed. It does weigh on mommy's patience though! Last night Rhonda only had to put her back a couple of times, but she was exhausted.

Our method for staying in her bed is simple; go through normal bedtime routine, once settled in bed as per usual, we wait outside her door (quietly) and if she gets out, we put her back. Trying to keep communication to a minimal is best. No drinks of water, cuddles, talking, etc. The point is "no rewards" for getting out of bed. It's simply not an option and the more a person gives in, the longer it takes. We are true believer of "don't create a problem where one doesn't exist."

Another of the things we did to keep her busy and to celebrate our last day at gymnastics until we start a new class in January.

Wish us luck with Day 3!! And if you have any questions about potty training or anything about the process, just ask. I'd love to help in any way I can.
